Last note:

A former dean of our Faculty of Graduate Studies emphasized the importance of getting the puck in the net.

By this he meant that it was useful to have the right equipment, to skate well etc. But what counted in the end was whether the puck went in.

Graduate work is similar. Hard work is not enough. You must make the things you do count.

Some wise advice on how to make things count can be found in ADVICE FOR A YOUNG INVESTIGATOR by Santiago Ramn (y Cajal) which may be available on the WEB through your University. Chapter 4: What Newcomers to Biological Research Should Know is remarkably relevant given that this book was written in the previous century.
