These sessions were part of "The Perspectives in Neuroscience Course" at the University of Western Ontario. In these sessions, examples were taken primarily from the field of neuroscience. However the advice applies to graduate students in most science related graduate programs.
The six session cover:
1) giving talks
2) attending scientific
meetings (including making posters and slide)
3) writing papers (and a thesis)
4)
acquiring research skills
5) applying for scholarships and grants
6) planning and
applying for a job
Much of this material is based on a workshop entitled " Teaching Survival Skills and Ethics to Emerging Scientists" held at the Ogleby Resort and Conference Center, Wheeling, West Virginia, May 18 to 21, 1995 and hosted by Beth Fischer and Michael Zigmond of the University of Pittsburgh.
